Vancouver Latin American Film Festival Announces 2014 Film Lineup

The Vancouver Latin American Film Festival, running from August 28 to Sept 7, is proud to announce its 2014 film lineup. For 12 years VLAFF has been one of the principal windows for Latin American cinema in Canada. Our film selection is recognized internationally for its curatorial vision that honours new Latin American filmmakers alongside more established ones.

Festival goers can look forward to 73 films, including 36 feature-length films, exhibited in three venues in downtown Vancouver. The program includes the third year of our New Directors Competition (7 films compete for this award) as well as the fourth year of the Al Jazeera Documentary Competition (7 films in competition), which is given in partnership with the Al Jazeera Documentary Channel. Sixteen short films are also in competition for Best Short Film. The festival will award $5,000 in cash prizes for its different sections in competition. For the first time this year, we will also present an Audience Award.

Our Panorama section offers a view of some of the most recent and exciting new Latin American films. To honour the 55th Anniversary of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC), we will screen the classic Cuban film Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) by

Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, considered by many as one of the top 100 films of the 20th century. We will also be screening No One Writes to the Colonel (1999), the film adaptation of the novella by the late writer and Nobel Prize winner, Gabriel García Márquez.

Now in its fourth edition, the program Canada Looks South will highlight films from Latin-Canadian filmmakers. This year we focus on works by Chilean-Canadian filmmakers. In our section Indigenous Film from BC & Beyond, we are partnering with the Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival to screen films by BC First Nations filmmakers alongside works by Indigenous filmmakers from Oaxaca, Mexico.

This year we partner with the Museum of Anthropology at UBC to present a series of Afro-Cuban films as part of their exhibition "Without Masks: Contemporary Afro-Cuban Art." We also welcome a new partnership with the Etxepare Basque Institute in Spain to introduce to Vancouver audiences films spoken in Basque, one of the oldest languages in Europe.

Chile is the guest country at VLAFF 2014, and we will have the pleasure of welcoming six Chilean filmmakers. Within the activities, we will have a retrospective on the Chilean actor Manuela Martelli, one of the most recognized Chilean film actors. She will be in attendance at the festival.

The film schedule will be posted online in the coming weeks. Tickets go on sale August 12 at www.vlaff.org.
