Two years ago, our festival included a new initiative to give Vancouver students the opportunity to learn about Latin American culture through cinema. The Vancouver Latin American Film Festival's (VLAFF) first annual Youth Jury was selected from a city-wide competition open to post-secondary students aged 18 to 30.The jury members were selected based on the quality of their work, their academic experience, and interest in Latin American culture.

The winner of the 2012 Youth Choice award was the film “Morir de Pie" (Die Standing up) from Mexico; an Special Mention was given to “Distancia” (Distance) from Guatemala.

For the third running year, the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival is giving students the opportunity to be part of their Youth Jury, a group post-secondary student aged 18 to 30 that screen films during the Festival in September and select 2013's Youth Choice Award. The students selected for this year's Jury will be recognized in the Festival's catalogue and will receive a full Festival pass, including invitations to the opening and closing gala ceremonies.

To be considered for a place on this year's Youth Jury, you must attend one screening of VLAFF’s monthly presentations and write a 500-word essay on the movie. Jury members will be selected based on quality of work, academic experience, and interest in Latin American culture and film.

Your first opportunity to attend a screening will be on February 17th at 6:00pm, where we will be screening Expiration Date (Fecha de Caducidad, from Mexico) at Pacific Cinémathèque (1131 Howe St). There will be further opportunities to attend screening on March 19th and April 16th.
