With a phenomenal use of music, minimal dialogue, and beautifully textured black and white cinematography, Transeunte follows the story of Expedito, a retiree who has lost all ties with life. As he wanders through the bustling centre of Rio de Janeiro amongst so many other anonymous faces, he plays witness to the dramas of others that he observes in the streets. And yet, he passes by unnoticed, as though he has become an extra in his own life story. The routine of his days leads to a profound alienation that seems immovable.

Pastorela

Everyone in the town of San Miguel Nenepilco knows that since being a boy, Agent Jesus Juárez (aka Chucho) has always represented the Devil in their traditional Pastorela (Shepherds’ Play). Hence, this Christmas all hell breaks loose when the new parish priest, the exorcist Father Mundo, gives the role to someone else. Chucho must stage an epic battle between good and evil to recover what by tradition belongs solely to him. Pastorela is a rollicking comedy that pokes fun at some of Mexico’s most time-honoured religious institutions and customs.

This film portrays the incredible estela de Carlotto from her life as a contented school teacher, wife, and mother to her devastation at the disappearance of her daughter and subsequent abduction of her grandson by the Argentine military, to her political awakening as a leader of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo. A profoundly emotional portrait of a woman who transformed her pain into a force for human rights and whose struggle became a symbol in Argentina and around the world.

REPEAT SCREENING: El Ardor

Described by writer-director Pablo Fendrik as a “Mesopotamian Western,” El Ardor stars Gael García Bernal as Kaí, a mysterious shaman who emerges from the Río Paraná to defend a clan of tobacco farmers against a band of cold-blooded land-grabbers. But this is no ordinary Western. Filmed on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, near the border of Brazil and Argentina, the lush, claustrophobic jungle with its birds, insects and prowling animals becomes as much a part of the story as the misfortunes of its characters.

Seashore is a wander through the borderlands between love and friendship, exploring sexual orientation and personal identity. The outstanding camerawork picks up on the protagonists’ complex emotional states in the same way as the soundtrack captures the roaring of the sea: gentle and powerful in equal measure.
