La Salada

With an acute eye and an understated sense of humour, La Salada explores the experiences of Korean, Bolivian and Taiwanese immigrants living in Argentina. The film is structured around three intertwining stories that take place in La Salada — the largest unregulated market in Buenos Aires: a Korean father and daughter prepare for an arranged marriage, a young Bolivian man searches for work, and a Taiwanese DVD seller tries to woo a young woman to be his girlfriend.

La Sirga

Abandoned and alone, a young girl wanders through the misty highlands of the Andes. War memories invade her mind like threatening thunder. Uprooted by the armed conflict, she seeks refuge with her only remaining family member, a gruff and unwelcoming uncle. He runs La Sirga, a dilapidated guesthouse on the shores of the immense La Cocha lake, a place of mystery and legend, sacred to the ancient indigenous Quillacinga. There, on a swampy and murky beach, Alicia will try to find shelter from the menace of her fears.

Lessons for a War

Lecciones para una guerra

Between 1982 and 1996, the Ixil and K’iche’ people took refuge in the mountains as a last resort to save themselves from the massacres carried out by the Guatemalan army, which took the lives of more than 200,000 indigenous people. After those fourteen years, the communities ended up settling in the northeastern part of the range, an area currently under siege due to its wealth of natural resources. This evocative documentary is a celebration of the resilience of people preparing to defend themselves against another coming war. A chant of hope from a community that will not give up.

Lessons for Zafirah

Lecciones para Zafirah

Created as a cinematographic diary for Zafirah, the directors’ three-year-old daughter, this documentary is a poignant testimony about the era of human migration in which we live. It records the faces and stories of the people who congregate around the train, which represents the symbolic vehicle of escape for the thousands who travel through Mexico to the United States each year. And, it captures the participation of people who voluntarily provide assistance to the migrants.

The two traverse Cali on bike and skateboard, scouting for surfaces to decorate with whatever paint they can scavenge. Inspired by news of the Arab Spring uprisings, they dream of collaborating on a vast mural (with graffiti artist Mario Wize) that will express solidarity with Egypt's student demonstrators.
